ALEKSANDRA WANATOWICZ & HER DESIGNER JEWELLERY

Both of us studied journalism in Katowice ,where we met , but so far Aleksandra never mentioned her real passion- jewellery design. Currently she attends the first year of the Cracow School of Art and Fashion Design (SAPU).

FASHIONER: Since when do you design jewellery?

Wanatowicz:  I had artistic aspirations since kindergarten , I ‘d always  paint, stick or cut something. I have a collection of Vogue from the 90s on, but I was already shopaholic as a child. In high school I started to make jewellery as gifts for friends. At that time there was nothing interesting in  stores. Of course, I made some accessories for myself as well, but except very special occasions I don’t usually wear jewellery. I remember when I made hair bands with ribbons for my friends, now they are in fashion, but at the time of high school it was very original and unique gift.

FASHIONER: But you have decided to study journalism. Why?

Wanatowicz: I decided to study journalism instead of  industrial design because I didn’t prepared my portfolio on time. Despite the fact that I had a lot of projects, I wasn’t completely satisfied with them. I am a perfectionist in that matter. As a freshman I started to expose my hair bands on  the allegro portal and discovered that people really like them. A lot of people wanted to have this handmade, unique and inexpensive band. That was the first time I have earned money on my hobby. The bands were selling more and more and at one point the other designers began to copy them and even  use my photos on their auctions.

FASHIONER: How long it takes You to finish a project?

Wanatowicz:  Realization of a project is not such a big deal as finding the components. That is the biggest problem. Most of the materials I use were ordered  abroad, mainly in Germany & France.

FASHIONER: I have always remembered you dressed modestly, usually in black, classic outfits. You have mentioned earlier that you don’t usually wear any jewellery. What made you send your projects to Elle?

Wanatowicz: A friend encouraged me to send my projects to the Elle and Kate&Kate contest. This contest was the first time I showed my work to a wider audience. As a reward I got a  month of intern-ship in Paris with Marek Wojcicki, the French designer with Polish origin. He has worked for Channel, Yves Saint-Laurent and Svarowski. I don’t really know how to speak about my work, I’m slowly getting used to this very new situation. I haven’t told about the won contest to any of my SAPU classmates yet.

FASHIONER: What makes Your projects original? How the Polish market of designer jewellery really looks like?

Wanatowicz: I care a lot about the quality. My projects are high-ended. At the moment most of the jewellery in Poland is classic, silver and gold from jeweller or cheap plastic accessories from the chain stores. There is very little of something in between – designer jewellery. That’s why there are such a big problems with finding components for my projects ,but I have to say that it slowly gets better.

FASHIONER: How was  your intern-ship in Paris like? Did you get surprised with anything?

Wanatowicz: I got to know designing jewellery through the Swarovski and Channel workshops. It surprised me that Chanel jewellery is made in quite small workshops, placed far away from the city. There were very few employees.  I imagined that much more people work there. Participation in the contest made me realized that I can really do something , something other people like and that it fits me. That was the main impulse for me to start thinking about professional career in this industry.

FASHIONER: Is it hard to be a young designer who just started to make her very first steps in her profession?

Wanatowicz: I would like to work for someone or cooperate with other designers. It’s impossible for one to be noticed right away. I try to form my name in the industry, do not go for compromises. I care a lot about the quality, I don’t buy just anything , I am very picky in this matter. When it comes to the designer jewellery the only way to set your name in the business is opening your own company or giving it to some celebrity , the trend setter.  I am very surprised that people are familiar with names of clothes designers but they have no idea of jewellery designers, so it’s really hard to be noticed.

FASHIONER: Can you describe Aleksandra Wanatowicz jewellery?

Wanatowicz: The first collection named „Just silk” are silk bracelets made of materials produced by the best designers like Roberto Cavalli, Alexander McQeen, Basso&Brooke. Each of them is different.  The second collection “Simple Pieces” are necklaces made of silk cords decorated with Swarovski crystals which I brought from Paris.

FASHIONER: What are you currently working on ?

Wanatowicz: In February I will introduce the new collection, made with an Arabic method of embroidery on clothes. I’m also working on the fringe  earrings .

FASHIONER: Where can we buy your jewellery?

Wanatowicz: There are two stores in Katowice – Incanto and recently, you can get my work in MD Concept. The owner of this very new place on the map of Katowice – Maja Szady – helps and supports the young, Polish designers. Perhaps soon you will be able to buy it in Cracow. You can make orders by facebook as well. The prices are from 100 up to 1000 zloty for a piece.

FASHIONER: Besides jewellery do you consider designing clothes?

Wanatowicz: I m planning to create a collection of clothes and shoes next year. Especially the shoes are my great ambition. My favourite colours are pink, red, coral , grey, gold , silver so classic or something very colourful. Mostly I like classic clothes, with jewellery you can let yourself go much more just don’t make yourself look like a Christmas tree.

FASHIONER: Exactly, how do you find Polish people clothing?

Wanatowicz: I see  people who are well dressed or just looking for their own style. Most are either boring or over-dressed. Fall into extremes. Unfortunately it often happens that people try to transform themselves into someone they are not. They copy pictures from the fashion magazines from which they should choose only some details. It gets better, more and more stores are opening , people travel abroad and see newest trends. It’s not good yet but it’s getting better. Also  the fashion for sewing for yourself appears even though sewing is nowadays more expensive than buying clothes in stores. Polish women try to sew by themselves because the shops have a few, standard sizes and not every woman can get something what fits her figure.

FASHIONER: How about Polish men?

Wanatowicz: Men’s fashion is in infancy. Unfortunately even in our fashion school we mainly study how to design for women. I do consider collection for men, maybe someday I will create some clothes or shoes. When it comes to men’s jewellery I don’t accept anything else than a watch or cuff links.

FASHIONER: Where do you find your inspirations?

Wanatowicz: When I see a material I wonder right away what could I use it for? I find much more inspiration from the nature like flowers, butterflies, snowflakes, corals and the underwater world than things created by humans. I believe that  fashion doesn’t exists  without art, sculpture, history and architecture. I find movie and theatre costumes very inspiring. Simple beauty.
