Silver Designer Jewellery En (Frugal) Vogue

Silver designer jewellery is the latest trend in fashion as the market moves to reflect the current economic climate.

Retail Jeweller’s Shanon Hutchinson reported that silver jewellery was becoming more popular than gold and statement pieces because people were feeling the pinch following Christmas shoppinh and the rise in value added tax (VAT).

The precious metals market is fluctuating in price with the value of gold on the increase so jewellery designers are likely to create silver charms and trinkets that are affordable to a mass customer base.

Consumers also have less disposable income to spend on luxury items such as designer jewellery since VAT increased from 17.5 per cent to 20 per cent in early January in a bid to reduce the national debt.

Jewellery designer Ana De Costa told Retail Jeweller that it is important to adapt to economic pressures in order to remain popular with jewellery buying customers who have been affected by the troubled economy.

She told Ms Hutchinson: “With the high prices in gold, creatives and jewellers need to be flexible and move their work with the times.”

Other jewellery designers appear to be following De Costa’s lead by creating original pieces using varieties of silver rather than promoting the metal as an affordable alternative to gold and platinum pieces.

Despite the country’s economic woes, it appears that loved up people will still be spending large on designer jewellery this Valentine’s Day in an attempt to impress that special someone.

Social commentators have said how spending on emotional or romantic days like Valentine’s is often unaffected by outside economic issues as people continue to buy luxury items for their partners, friends and family.

Shoppers may want to purchase designer jewellery with a love them with heart shaped trinkets and charms especially popular during mid February as people try to express themselves through presents.

Jewellery wearers are advised not to follow in the footsteps of Mad Men star Christina Hendricks who recently lost an $850,000 diamond bracelet on the red carpet of the Golden Globes’ award ceremony.

Luckily for the actress, someone found the designer jewellery and handed it in to the relevant authorities.

A spokesperson for Chopard said: “Whoever put it on (Hendrick’s) wrist may not have closed the safety clasp correctly. But both bracelets and her earrings were returned in perfect condition today.”

Always ensure that clasps and locks on designer jewellery and fully closed in order to minimise the risk of loss and theft.

Poisonous designer jewellery seized in raid

Fake designer jewellery worth £2m and which could give wearers nickel poisoning has been seized during a raid in Battersea.

Following the huge haul, Trading Standards officers today issued an urgent warning to shoppers who think they may have recently bought counterfeit goods.

The potential health scare emerged this week when Trading Standards investigators discovered high levels of nickel in fake jewellery and cufflinks confiscated as part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and manufacture of pirate goods.

The hazardous items were recovered as part of a haul of jewellery that was seized during a raid on a private address and a storage unit in Battersea. Fake designer jewellery, handbags, watches and sunglasses with a street value of about £2m was confiscated.

According to Trading Standards officers, the goods were being sold at markets and car boot sales in Wandsworth as well as on the internet and from stalls in shopping centres across the south east.

The counterfeit labels included Dior, Bulgari, Tiffany, Links of London, Cartier, Mont Blanc, Ray Ban, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Patek Phillipe, Rolex, Gucci, Pandora and Swarovski.

A lot of the jewellery bore false hallmarks and tests commissioned indicated it was gold or silver plated brass. One man is currently on police bail while the investigation continues.

The council’s consumer protection spokeswoman, Councillor Sarah McDermott, said: “We are advising people who may have recently purchased cut-price designer jewellery or cufflinks to be aware that it could pose a health risk.

“If you think you may have bought some of these items at a car boot sale or a street market for example, then it is extremely important that you look out for any of the symptoms associated with nickel poisoning.

“If you think you may be experiencing any of these symptoms then you should seek immediate medical advice.”

Nickel poisoning can cause cancer and in extreme cases can be fatal. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, coughing and shortness of breath
